  • Client Building: The core opportunity centers around sales—finding, selling and retaining clients. There are several aspects of our core sales opportunity that you should understand:
    • Our commission rates are among the highest in our industry owing to the fact that we don’t have advertising, inventory or brick-and-mortar retail expenses.
    • Our commission rates don’t go down for repeat business. Our customers buy from us for many years, and this pay plan dynamic is what allows our sales professionals to build significant income and work-life balance over time. You earn the same commission rate on a customer’s 20th purchase as you do on their 1st.
    • There are no territories at Tom James. You follow your natural network and referrals anywhere in your metropolitan market. Your “pasture” will never be restricted or hampered, allowing you to focus on growth wherever you can.
    • The more you sell, the greater your commission percentage. As you build your client base, your commission rate naturally increases.
    • Monthly, quarterly and seasonal bonuses provide significant pay value for growing sales on top of our core commission structure.
    • Annual trips to luxury and exotic locations are offered to sales professionals who hit various sales levels.
  • Leadership: Entering the ranks of leadership in our company is one of the most significant transition points an individual can experience in their career. There are several aspects of our leadership opportunity you should understand:
    • No politics. The opportunity to hire is clearcut and driven by sales success. Once qualified, your progression on our leadership path is driven by your team’s success in growing sales, people and profits. Period. You control your leadership opportunity 100%.
    • Performance-based pay. Leadership isn’t a title at Tom James; it’s a responsibility. Your leadership pay plan reflects this, paying richly to those who help others become successful.
    • Significant development opportunities. We invest heavily in leadership training, believing that our success hinges on the health and capabilities of our leaders.
  • Net Worth Building: In our view one of our most important responsibilities to our people is to create vehicles that allow them to build security and wealth alongside the income building opportunities we offer. Tom James has 3 distinct programs that help our people build wealth:
    • Stock: Tom James is a privately held, employee-owned company. Shares in Tom James are earned through sales and leadership performance. Our compound annual growth rate since the inception of the stock program has been 14.1%; our average dividend is 2-3% of stock value.
    • 401(k): Tom James has a competitive 401(k) offering featuring a 20% match on employee contributions up to 6% of their income.
    • Profit Sharing: Most years our board of directors determines a share of profits to contribute back into our employees’ retirement accounts on top of the 20% match we standardly make. Typically, the contribution amount is 2-3% of the employees annual income, so an employee earning $0 would receive a $0 contribution to their retirement account on top of a 20% match on their individual contributions.
  • Special Opportunities: There are parallel opportunities many of our sales professionals enjoy in addition to their sales and leadership opportunities:
    • Recruiting: Individuals with a skill for identifying and attracting top talent to Tom James can earn the opportunity to open campus recruiting relationships, partnerships with direct selling “feeder” programs, and engage in other recruiting activities. They receive pay per hire and performance bonuses on the production levels of the people they attract.
    • Coaching: Other individuals are particularly skilled at influencing, motivating and coaching young sales professionals to increased levels of production. Through our Performance Coaching Program, these individuals earn the opportunity to work alongside our young sales professionals to provide an additional level of support and training to the individual. They receive performance-based pay on the individuals they coach.
    • Teaching: Still other individuals are extraordinary teachers. Our sales schools are led by top performing sales professionals with demonstrated skills in the areas they teach. These individuals have their own pay package for influencing and training our next generation of sales professionals.
  • Personal Development: Our opportunity is challenging, which should not come as a surprise to anyone desiring success—according to the US Census Bureau, only 6% of the US population earns over $0 annually, and among individuals below 30 years old that figure is 1.2%, so financial success is rare. But our perspective as a company is that challenges are not something we avoid; they’re opportunities to grow and develop and overcome. This is how we have created a culture where 68% of our sales force with 3+ years tenure earns over $0, and 50% earns over $0.
